Annie Rollins: SHADOW PUPPETRY

Annie Rollins' shadow experiments here at the studio were preliminary sketches for a larger future project, a puppet show to be performed in ghost towns of China. During the course of her stay, she found and built all the materials she needed, then held a small viewing party at the Camel House (down the road to the lake). Attendees were encouraged to practice puppeteering backstage, or interacting with the puppet directly onstage.

"Pulling from Chinese shadow puppetry's roots in 'ghost calling' and daoist shamanism, I want to create ghost/shadow life in the ghost towns - shadow performances for no one but the ghosts. We would film the performances and these would remain as project archives, for presentation. I would hopefully be doing design/testing and small iterations of the performances at the Lijiang Studio."  ~Annie R.

YUNG CHANG

Yung Chang spent his time at the studio working on writing a script for his next film, Eggplant. He also gave the other residents an early screening of his most recent work, The Gatekeeper (a short documentary following Yukio Shige, a retired police detective, who patrols Tojinbo Cliffs, a notorious destination for suicides in Japan). The film just won the best short documentary prize at the Los Angeles Film Festival and will be released on the curated film site, Field of Vision, during their third season. We all enjoyed the film very much and highly recommend everyone to go see it!
